From the President

Thanks to Dave D. for his program in August and also for doing a class later that week. I have only talked to a couple of students, but they said they really enjoyed it. I saw one of the carvings and it was great. Dave also said he would be willing to come back and do another class.

Show season is in full swing. First there was the Lane County
Fair. I haven't had any reports on that yet. We will get more at our next meeting.

Next was the Vancouver, Washington show, which Randy Litwiller and myself competed in. The next two weekends I will be attending shows in Monroe, Wash. and Longview, Wash. In October, there is the Spokane show, and the Puyallup show is the first part of November. Attending any of these shows is a great way to meet some great carvers and also to learn new techniques. Hardly a show goes by that I don't learn at least one new way of doing something that I would like to try on my next carving.

Our speaker for October will be Dave Walker from Salem. Dave has a great style of his own for carving birds and animals. He and his wife Sandy supervised the design, carving and painting of the carousel that was just completed for the city of Salem.
Dave is also putting on classes at his studio with himself and other well known carvers as instructors.
See you all in October.

Larry

Minutes from Aug. 4th Meeting

The meeting was called to order by President Larry Deedon at 7:00 p.m.

Larry said the time for submitting carvings for the Lane County exhibit was closed. He mentioned that several carvings were entered again this year. Fair officials indicated they would offer more variety of classes if the number of entries increased.

Rich Knee reported that eleven members attended the "carv-in" on Saturday, Aug. 4. He said that reservations will be made for next year and hoped that more members would attend.

Rich also reminded members that we need club members to represent the club at the Land County Fair on Friday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Free tickets will be distributed to volunteers.

Larry introduced Dave Disselbrett, a caricature carver from the Salem club. Dave talked about how he started his carving career and showed numerous carvings of block bodies, Santas, potato head bodies and golf balls. He handed out cutouts of the Oregon High Desert Walking Fish (his name for the cutout). Several members made a lot of chips. Dave provided knives for those who forgot to bring their own.

Interested members made arrangements with Dave for a future all day carving class.
